In 2006, this unit became a separate department. The department treats diseases of the digestive system, liver, pancreas and biliary tract.
About the Department
Consultants in the department have specialised in hepatobiliary surgery, liver transplantation, laparoscopic surgery, upper GI surgery, bariatric surgery and colorectal surgery. This surgical work is supported by gastroenterology, interventional radiology and endoscopy services.
HPB and GI surgeons perform hepatobiliary procedures, which include resections of the liver for tumours, surgery for obstructive jaundice, procedures for portal hypertension and surgical intervention for pancreatitis. With support from hepatology, endoscopy and interventional radiology services, a combined team approach is used for the management of liver tumours.
