Department of Respiratory Medicine at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre

The diagnosis and treatment of all respiratory problems are provided by the Department of Respiratory Medicine. The department operates a daily outpatient clinic as well as inpatient services, which include managing intensive care patients in wards and on ventilators. Studies were undertaken to define normative standards for lung function, the genesis of interstitial lung disease, and the measurement of serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) in Indian patients are only a few of the department's accomplishments. The department was one of the 1st in Western India to begin estimating ACE levels.

Throughout 10 to 14 years, the department participated in International Studies for Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC), serving as the Southeast Asia Regional Coordinator. Based on the ISAAC study, numerous publications have been published in international journals about the prevalence of rhinitis, eczema, and asthma in children. For all lung function tests, exercise testing, and sleep studies, our pulmonary function lab is fully outfitted with cutting-edge technology.

Key Technologies

The department provides both inpatient and outpatient services for non-invasive ventilation (NIV) support, NIV employing CPAP and bi-level devices for COPD, neuromuscular illness with respiratory failure, and sleep apnea. In the high-dependency unit or intensive care unit, NIV is administered for respiratory failure as part of treatment and for early ventilator weaning.

Among the subgroup of somewhat unwell patients with major co-morbidities, interventional pulmonology, a relatively new specialization, has eliminated the necessity for surgical therapy and opened new vistas in the area of pulmonary medicine.
