 ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
 
 
It was started in the year 1978 .The department at present is situated on the 2nd floor with facilities for consultation, a small theatre for procedures and a cubicle for supervised ultraviolet therapy.
 
 
     
     
   
 
 FACILITIES & SERVICES
 


The outpatient department is open to patients everyday 6 days a week.

A consultant is available for consultancy by prior appointment.Consultants are also available for any in-patient referrals.

Dermatology patients can be admitted as in-patients only by consultants of the department of dermatology.

General dermatology is mainstay of most dermatological consultations.Pediatric dermatology and Geriatric dermatology are a part of routine day to day practise.

All the consultants have special interest in diseases related to internal medicine.

Diseases associated with hematological problems are seen in joint consultation with the Hematologist.Similarly CRF(Chronic Renal Failure) and its related skin manifestations are jointly handled with the Nephrologist.

 
     
  Specialized Clinics  
     
  1. Hair clinic
 

There is a special attention paid to the patients with hair loss, both male as well as female.

Hormonal profile, ultrasound to rule out polycystics ovaries is routinely carried out in female patients.Trichogramme is done in all patients.

S. iron level, S. ferritin level, thyroid function tests are carried out. Any abnormalities are treated in concordance with Hematologist or Endochronologist as the case may be.

 
 
     
  2. Acanthosis Nigricans
 

Patients with excessive darkening of skin,thickening of skin in the body folds specially the axilla accompanied by obesity are investigated.

Investigations include a fasting sugar level, serum insulin level, lipid profile , measurement of weight and percentage body fat(or body mass index).Female patients are subjected to ultrasound to detect the presence of cystic ovaries
 
     
 
     
  3. Acne Rosacea clinic
 

All patients of acne specially females are assessed for their hormonal status.Isotretinoin is routinely prescribed with excellent results. Rosaccea is always kept in mind and biopsy performed to arrive at a conclusion.
 
     
 
     
  4. Psoriasis
 

The department attracts large number of patients of psoriasis because of excellent results obtained by offering a combination treatment which could include oral calcium,oral omega-3,oral isotretinoin,oral methotrexate ,cyclosporine along with UVB therapy.

Once patients go into remission they are put on maintenance PUVA Therapy(UVA & Psoralens)
 
     
 
     
  5. Atopic Dermatitis
 

The results of atopic dermatology both in adults and children have been found to be very encouraging.
 
     
 
     
  6. Cosmetology
 

  1. Hyperpigmentation

    Cosmetology procedures are carried out to treat hyperpigmentation, specially melasma.


    Chemical peels with alpha hydroxy acids of different concentrations are undertaken.
 
     
 
     
  7. Dermatosurgery
 

  1. Micropunch graft , Thin theirsch graft for Vitiligo Patients

  2. Acne Scars

    Acne Scars are revised by radiofrequency knife and at times chemically by 50% trichloroacetic acid application.Acne scars if superficial , are also subjected to chemical peels as office procedure as a form of skin polishing.





  3. Injection of fillers
    Restylane and Perlane injections are used to obliterate the nasolabial fold for giving an appearance of rejuvenated, younger look.

  4. Injection of Botox
    Botox is injected to remove frown lines,crows feet, and worry lines.

  5. Non surgical face lifts.

  6. Tattoo of lips in vitligo or recreating eyebrows is a procedure done with great success.

  7. Ear lobe repair with TCA Application.


  8. Shave Excision, Thin Thiersch graft for vitiligo and non healing ulcers.

  9. Paring of corns with cryotherapy.

  10. Removal of molluscum with curette.

  11. Revision of Scars by Radiofrequency knife or chemically by applying
    50% TCA.

  RESEARCH PROJECTS
     
 
  1. Erythema Nodosum is a manifestation of mycobacterium tuberculosis in India - to be proved by establishing the presence of MTB by PCR in skin biopsies.

    40 adult patients with EN will be studied to establish the above hypothesis.

  2. Hyperinsulenemia is a marker of Acanthosis Nigricans, PCOD, Obesity, Serum Lipid Abnormalities in female patients.A study carried out in 30 female patients with AN in comparison with 30 age ,sex matched controls.

  3. Oral corticosteroids along with anti leprosy drugs prevents nerve damage.

    A comparative study of leprosy patients with more than two patches was carried out by giving concomitant corticosteroid treatment in a randomized control trial.
