Hypertension
clinic functions on Mondays and Thursdays between 11
AM and 1 PM in room No. 220 in Jaslok Hospital. Several
research papers on hypertension are published in National
and International Journals.
Patients are seen with appointments taken from OPD
counter (56573014). Patients are thoroughly examined
(history and physical examination) and investigated
to rule out any secondary curable cause of hypertension
particularly in young hypertensives (35 years and
below). All patients are investigated to find out
if there is any target organ damage (i.e. involvement
of heart, eyes, kidneys and brain functions) due to
high blood pressure. As regards treatment, patients
are strongly advised to have proper diet (Dos and
Don’ts), physical exercise, yoga (particularly
shavasana and pranayam) and wherever necessary suitable
medications are prescribed. Patients are followed
periodically once in 1-3 months at the clinic.
In some selected cases, ambulatory blood pressure
monitoring is carried out. In this, patient’s
blood pressure is monitored during all 24 hours with
help of monitor (as seen in photograph), which is
tied to the patient. Patients carry on with all their
usual activities and we get information regarding
BP variation during routine work, exercise, excitement,
sex, sleep etc. We can then guide the patient scientifically
about dose and timings of the medication etc.
Several patients have benefited by attending hypertension
clinic.
