Besides, we also carry out pheresis for platelets and stem cell procedures for our oncology patients.

One of the major attractions in Jaslok Hospital Blood Bank is BAXTER’S CS3000 Cell separator. This machine is used for granulocyte aphaeresis, lymphocytes Apheresis, Platelet Apheresis, stem cell Apheresis and plasma.

Stem Cell Apheresis

It is a special procedure by which we selectively collect stem cells and use it in bone marrow transplantation for the treatment of leukemia, lymphomas, multiple myeloma etc. Stem cells the mononuclear cells (monocytes and lymphocytes). The stem cells donor can be the patient himself (Autologus donor) or a HLA matched donor (Allergenic donor). The donor is given Filgrastim injection.10 ugm/kg/day for four days and on the fifth day peripheral blood stem cells are collected. A biovalve cannula is inserted in to the subclavian vein under L.A. with all aseptic precautions to one valve the return tubing is attached through which remaining blood minus the stem cells is passed back into the donor to the other valve inlet tubing is attached through which blood is collected and processed in the cell separator.

Patient preparation
The patient is given high dose chemotherapy to destroy his cancer cells then he is given injection filglrastim to increase peripheral blood stem cells which are collected on the fifth day and preserve at -700 C. The patient is then given once again given high dose chemotherapy to kill the remaining cancer cells. Then the peripheral blood stem cells are administered patient intravenously he is protected from bacterial, viral and fungal infections.

In the year 2004 Twenty two stem cell Apheresis procedures were carried out in Jaslok Hospital under the Transfusion Medicine Department and Hemato Oncology Department, Two hundred and eight platelet Apheresis procedures were carried out in Transfusion Medicine Department.
